How Nickelodeon Australia & New Zealand Stays #1 | Nickelodeon Upfront 2018

Multi Channel Network (MCN), Australia's most progressive media advertising company, recently chatted to Vanessa Winley, the director of Ad Sales and Brand Partnerships at Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Australia & New Zealand, on the success of Nickelodeon in 2017, and what's in store for 2018 - including a third season of Nickelodeon Slime Cup!

What have been the stand out successes on Nickelodeon for 2017?

Fuelled by local productions, tent pole events and world-leading pre-school properties, Nickelodeon Networks wrapped its financial year (October 2016 – September 2017) retaining the #1 position among children 0-12 for the second year in a row – which is a great result!

A few of the biggest successes for us include the second season of Nickelodeon’s locally produced series SLIME CUP, which had an average audience increase of 36% from 2016, among the target demographic of children 5-12.

Another stand out was our first ever Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Sports Awards for Australia and New Zealand, simulcast on Nickelodeon and FOX SPORTS and ranking number one in its time slot for children 5-12. This project was particularly exciting because it was a six-week immersive entertainment experience across all screens, with local content featuring superstar athletes being distributed via the Nick Play app, online at nick.com.au, and on television, allowing kids to catch behind-the-scenes footage and stunts with their favourite sporting stars.

Lastly, the Nick Jr. PAW Patrol Honorary Pup Squad is a great example of how we engaged existing audiences with exclusive stunts, competitions and content across the network. The eight week multi-platform stunt was tailored to suit a client’s needs, while leveraging this powerhouse franchise. The PAW Patrol page and its competition page were the top two pages on the website across the period, showing strong demand for multiplatform campaigns.

What’s coming in 2018 across broadcast and digital?

We’re excited that a lot of our key tent poles and local productions will be returning for 2018. We’ll kick off the year with Crash the Bash, Kids’ Choice Awards express from the US in March and SLIME CUP on-ground auditions will follow before a premiere in June.

We’re also expanding our local short form content with the launch of Nickelodeon digital content verticals. We’ll be bolstering Nick Sports making it the go-to location for kids who want entertaining sporting content or games. We’ll also focus on new digital offerings, the exploration of augmented reality and new technologies, that will help create impactful online experiences.

Our mission is to continue to create the most talked about experiences of all time, so we will continue immersive on-ground activations surrounding our powerhouse content. From cinema activations, to publicity stunts and live events, this is will be a key focus for marketing efforts in the coming year.

Tell us a bit more about Crash the Bash?

Based upon a long history of connecting kids with the sports they love, Nickelodeon is creating more partnership opportunities with content production, promotions, prizing and activations on and off the field. We know sport is a passion point for Aussie kids and a great chance for brands to engage with thousands of people. We confirmed a second year of our partnership with Cricket Australia and the Big Bash League and in addition to ramping up our on-the-ground activations at matches across the country, we’ll also be doing a second season of the BBL and WBBL children’s television show aptly named Crash The Bash.

Crash the Bash premieres on Nickelodeon just before Christmas and runs all the way through January. There are lots of sponsorship opportunities with the program and other Nickelodeon summer programming.

For partnership opportunities with Nickelodeon please contact your MCN representative on 02 9209 6300.

Building upon a long-standing history of celebrating the sports and athletes kids love, Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Sports Awards gives kids the power to choose the biggest sports stars to win awards from eleven uniquely unconventional categories.

During the six-week campaign, original content featuring superstar athletes will be distributed via the Nick Play app, online at nick.com.au, and on television, allowing kids to catch behind-the-scenes footage and stunts with their favourite sporting stars. They can also cast their votes in eleven uniquely unconventional categories to determine the winners, who will be announcing in a one-hour television special.

Unlike traditional awards, there are no rules – it’s AFL players, verses cricketers, verses surfers; it’s code verses code and male verses female in categories such as #Hero, Sickest Moves and Hands of Gold. Nominees will be announced on Friday, 6 October 2017.

Voting opens on Friday, 6 October and closes on Sunday, 12 November, with winners announced when Kids’ Choice Sports Awards airs on Nickelodeon and on Nick Play at 5.30pm on Monday, 20 November.

Ben Cox, General Manager and Vice President of Nickelodeon Australia and New Zealand believes that this is the next logical step for a kid’s entertainment brand operating in sport-loving nations such as Australia and New Zealand.

“We know sports are a huge passion point for kids and the launch of Kids’ Choice Sports is the perfect way for us to continue to connect with them on the things they love. After several years of working with Tennis Australia and now more recently, the KFC Big Bash League, we know that for a lot of kids, their biggest heroes are local sporting stars.”

“We also recognise the desire for sporting codes and brands to connect with kids and we’re able to offer them somewhere those desires can come together with high-quality locally produced content. Giving us the opportunity for bespoke integration across multiple platforms throughout the six-week voting campaign as well as in-show – the possibilities are endless.”

Fuelled by local productions, tent pole events and world-leading properties, Nickelodeon has spent the last 15 months ranked #1 STV channel among Children 0-12 – creating the perfect audience availability for a new property launch.

“The inaugural Kids’ Choice Sports Awards will be an immersive entertainment experience across all screens,” said Hugh Baldwin, Nickelodeon’s Director of Television and Multiplatform. “Anyone can do a one-off awards show with a red carpet, but kids want to be engaged online, on the app, with games, and to have their say. The Kids’ Choice Sports Awards will provide a new take on the awards format and re-invent it for sports-loving Aussies and Kiwis.”

Beginning October 6, kids can cast their votes at nick.com.au/kcs before the one-hour special will premiere on Nickelodeon at 5.30 on Monday, 20 November.

Good Choice: Olympian Simone Manuel Wins Her First Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Sports #SeeHer Award

Original ANA Alliance for Family Entertainment Press Release via Business Wire:

Good Choice: Olympian Simone Manuel Wins Her First Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Sports #SeeHer Award

Swimming Superstar Honored by Marketer-Led National Movement to Eliminate Gender Bias in Advertising and Media for “Inspirational Achievements”

July 14, 2017 08:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time

http://www.seeher.com

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Two-time Olympic gold medalist Simone Manuel was presented with the first-ever #SeeHer Award during a special moment at Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Sports 2017 awards telecast last night. Manuel, who won a total of four medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics and is a two-time individual National Collegiate Athletic Association champion, was chosen for her inspiring role as a barrier breaker for women and girls.

The partnership with Nickelodeon is the latest effort by #SeeHer, the influential national movement led by the Alliance for Family Entertainment (AFE), a subcommittee of the Association of National Advertisers (ANA). The #SeeHer mission is to achieve a 20 percent rise in accurate portrayals of women and girls in advertising and media by 2020 — the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote. The movement’s members include companies who market more than 1,000 of the biggest and most well-known family brands and who represent $40 billion-plus of U.S. television ad spend.

This is the first #SeeHer Award in sports. Last month #SeeHer launched the Advisory Board for Sports and News and welcomed Women’s National Basketball Association President Lisa Borders, former chair of the Coca-Cola Foundation and vice mayor of Atlanta, as its inaugural Board advisor.

“Simone is the embodiment of everything our movement stands for,” says #SeeHer Chair Stephen Quinn. “Sports play a critical role in helping girls learn important life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and confidence. We are delighted that #SeeHer is being recognized as a part of Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards.”

In only one year, #SeeHer has become the industry standard in providing advertisers, agencies, and media executives with state-of-the-art insight, activation strategies, and tools to identify and eliminate unconscious bias in ads, entertainment content, and media planning. For business leaders, marketers, agencies, producers, and content creators, #SeeHer has become an integral part of the marketing industry’s process, with a growing number of clients integrating the initiative’s tools into their creative copy testing, media plans, and RFPs.

“Simone is the living truth of why we have taken up this mission, and we congratulate her on an award very well earned,” concludes ANA CEO Bob Liodice.

Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards airs Sunday, July 16 at 8 p.m. (ET/PT).

About the #SeeHer Initiative

Despite the strides made to accurately portray women and women in the media, an unconscious bias persists against women and girls in advertising, media, and programming. The Association of National Advertisers (ANA) Alliance for Family Entertainment (AFE) launched the #SeeHer initiative in June 2016 in partnership with The Girl's Lounge, after the White House announced that the elimination of gender bias in media is critical to the nation's future. The #SeeHer initiative’s mission is to increase accurate portrayals of women and girls in media by 20 percent by 2020, the 100th anniversary of women winning the right to vote. For more information, visit www.SeeHer.com, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

About the Association of National Advertisers (ANA)

The ANA (Association of National Advertisers) provides leadership that advances marketing excellence and shapes the future of the industry. Founded in 1910, the ANA's membership includes more than 650 companies with 10,000 brands that collectively spend over $250 billion in marketing and advertising. The ANA also includes the Business Marketing Association (BMA) and the Brand Activation Association (BAA) which operate as divisions of the ANA. The ANA advances the interests of marketers and promotes and protects the well-being of the marketing community. For more information, visit www.ana.net, follow us on Twitter, or join us on Facebook.

About the ANA Alliance for Family Entertainment (AFE)

The ANA AFE is a coalition of national advertisers with more than 1,000 brands, whose members represent $40 billion-plus of U.S. television ad spend. The group's mission is to find, nurture, and support high-quality content the entire family can enjoy on multiple distribution platforms. In 2016 the AFE expanded its mission to include gender equality through its #SeeHer initiative. For more information, see www.SeeHer.com and www.anaafe.net.
