Sesame Workshop Launches New Initiative to Help Children and Families Prepare for and Recover from Extreme Weather, Beginning with Storm on 'Sesame Street' Special

Sesame Workshop Launches New Initiative to Help Children and Families Prepare for and Recover from Extreme Weather, Beginning with Storm on Sesame Street Special

New Special Features Celebrities Post Malone and Michelle Buteau

(New York, NY, July 30, 2026) As extreme weather events grow more frequent and intense, Sesame Workshop today announced the launch of its new initiative to help children, families, and communities prepare for, cope with, and recover from extreme weather like hurricanes, floods, and wildfires. With funding from long-time partner PSEG Foundation, the initiative debuts with a new storm‑themed Sesame Street special premiering on Netflix and PBS KIDS on Monday, August 3, and on YouTube in September, along with View-and-Do activities and trusted educational resources to help families navigate whatever weather comes their way.

A Brand New Special with Celebrity Guests

In the Storm on Sesame Street special, Elmo and his friends work together to get ready for a big storm, learning how to be prepared, have courage, and calm their bodies and minds when things feel scary. After the storm passes, Sesame Street looks different, and everyone pitches in to help their neighbors rebuild their homes. With the help of the neighborhood, including celebrity guests Post Malone and Michelle Buteau, Elmo and Abby set out to make a difference, and discover that small acts of kindness, and support from friends, can make the biggest difference of all.

Storm on Sesame Street builds on the legacy and impact of the iconic Sesame Street Gets Through a Storm, which premiered in 2001 on PBS KIDS and re-aired in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina (2005) and Superstorm Sandy (2012). In this special episode, Big Bird’s nest was destroyed in a hurricane, and the community came together to help rebuild it.

Addressing a Growing Need

Extreme weather is affecting more families than ever. Children born in 2020 are projected to experience up to seven times more extreme weather events than those born in 1960, and one in five Americans has had to evacuate their home due to these events. In a national survey, two in three parents (64%) reported experiencing one or more extreme weather events in the past two years. Such weather events can lead to displacement, home damage, increased utility bills, negative health impacts, and less time outside. It often leads to disruptions in school and childcare. Among parents who experienced extreme weather, the majority (78%) worried about the impact on their children.

“Extreme weather is now a reality for many families, and young children need support they can understand and trust,” said Joseph Giraldi, Chief Operating Officer, Sesame Workshop. “With our Extreme Weather response initiative, we’re using the power of Sesame Street to help children prepare for what’s ahead, cope with big emotions during moments of disruption, and begin to recover afterward. From our new storm special to year‑round resources and community outreach, this initiative reflects our commitment to showing up for children and families when they need it most.”

Sesame Workshop’s Extreme Weather response initiative builds on the lessons in the special and will provide research-based resources to support families before, during, and after extreme weather events. The content, featuring Sesame Street friends, will help children understand what’s happening around them, manage big feelings, and take simple, empowering steps to stay safe like noticing helpers and being one, too.

Resources That Extend Beyond the Screen

New free resources in English and Spanish—available to parents, caregivers, and providers at sesame.org/emergencies—will include:

  • New Digital Content:Sesame Street videos with beloved characters offering timely advice and comfort.
  • Refreshed Family Guides: Updated Let’s Get Ready and Here for Each Other guides to reflect changes in extreme weather intensity and frequency.
  • Shareable Activities: New printables and articles that support children and families’ overall well-being connected to environmental stressors, such as heat or air quality.
  • A New Storybook: A printed and digital storybook, available later this fall, to help children find words for goodbye and healing when the things they love are lost.
  • Sesame Care Kits: Child‑friendly “go‑bags” with familiar friends like Elmo and Abby that include comfort items and everyday essentials such as backpacks, blankets, and toothbrushes to support families during evacuations and periods of displacement.

With generous support from Ford Motor Company and Amazon, Sesame Workshop is further extending the resources and care kits through community outreach activities with partner networks.

Sesame Workshop will collaborate with PBS stations and national implementation partners including Catholic Charities USA, Project:Camp, Team Rubicon and others, to engage with families through community preparedness and relief events at libraries, community centers, recovery shelters, or rebuilding sites. Featuring costumed character appearances and the distribution of preparedness materials and care kits, the events will bring reassurance and support to children and caregivers.

The Extreme Weather response initiative is part of Sesame Workshop’s broader mission to help children everywhere grow smarter, stronger, and kinder.

With a curated collection of series, films, and games, every discovery is designed to entertain, engage, and enrich little ones in ways that parents can feel good about.

Gear up for an all-new Gabby's Dollhouse show, more Sesame Street now available in the Sesame Street collection, a podcast made just for preschoolers, exciting additions to the Netflix Playground game app, and so much more.

Families around the world continue to make Netflix a destination for Kids & Family entertainment. In 2025, kids programming accounted for nearly 22% of all viewing on Netflix, and a family-friendly title has appeared in the Global Top 10 every week for nearly four years and counting.

From preschool favorites like CoComelon Lane and Peppa Pig, to trusted voices in early childhood education including Mark Rober, Ms. Rachel and Danny Go! audiences are continuing to press play on stories that encourage curiosity and learning.

There's even more to look forward to! Below, dive into an all-new lineup of family-friendly shows, games, and experiences coming soon and read more at Tudum.com.

New Stories Coming to Netflix

Hosted by Laila Lockhart Kraner (as Gabby) and inspired by the global hit show Gabby's Dollhouse, the Untitled Gabby's Dollhouse Competition Series follows talented young baker-and-maker duos as they compete in whimsical baking and crafting challenges inspired by the magical world of Gabby. Four holiday-themed episodes will arrive later this year, along with new episodes in 2027.

In addition to the new series, Gabby and the Gabby Cats return on September 14 for Season 14 of Gabby's Dollhouse, which was the No. 4 series on Netflix in the second half of 2025 with roughly 108 million views.

"Since Gabby's Dollhouse first premiered on Netflix in 2021, a world of creativity and imagination has exploded for our young audience and it only continues to grow" said co-creators Jennifer Twomey and Traci Paige Johnson. "We've been so lucky to continue playing and creating in the Dollhouse, with a fourteenth season coming to Netflix, and now a competition series that brings play to life in a new way."

Return to the neighborhood with Elmo and friends! Today, we're excited to bring the official Sesame Street collection to Netflix, with more than 100 beloved episodes and specials from the library alongside the latest Season 56 episodes, including the recently released Volume 3. And there's more to look forward to - this July, over 20 additional library episodes, including Sesame Street Classics and My Sesame Street Friends: My Abby Season 2, will be added, giving families even more ways to enjoy their favorite friends from Sesame Street.

We also have an exciting lineup of fan-favorite characters to love with the premiere of Dr. Seuss's Red Fish, Blue Fish Season 3 on August 10, a preschool comedy which follows the adventures of an odd couple of fish friends as they explore and introduce opposite concepts; followed by Sheriff Labrador Season 2 on August 31 delivering more playful fun helping children learn safety tips, healthy habits, kindness, and curiosity at home, outdoors, on the road, and beyond.

And that's not all! Starting today, for the first time, families can stream episodes of the award-winning Bedtime Stories with Netflix Jr. from Netflix, featuring soothing stories from beloved worlds including StoryBots, Trash Truck, The Creature Cases, Gabby's Dollhouse, and Dr. Seuss to help little ones relax and drift off to sleep. With more than 16 million downloads to date across podcast platforms and Netflix Jr. YouTube, the series (which is backed by real sleep science) has become a go-to part of bedtime routines.

New Games Coming to Netflix Playground

Netflix Playground, an app for games designed especially for children ages 8 and under, is expanding its library of games featuring cherished characters and worlds from Peppa Pig to Bad Dinosaurs. Included with every Netflix membership, the app encourages learning through play with activities designed to spark curiosity and exploration. With no in-app purchases or extra fees, and offline access for travel, it's built to make playtime easy for kids and parents alike. Netflix Playground has been in Netflix's Top 10 most played mobile games every week since launch.

Later this year, Netflix Playground will roll out new games including PJ Masks: Save the Night, My Very Hungry Caterpillar, and more from the world of My Little Pony, PAW Patrol, Trash Truck, and more Sesame Street. In addition, a brand-new collection of six KPop Demon Hunters minigames are now available - the world of HUNTR/X awaits!

Long Live Imagination Hopscotch Experience

Over the weekend, as part of the Long Live Imagination campaign, a whimsical hopscotch experience took over Madison Square Park in New York City. For three days, a giant hopscotch path wound through the park's walkways, leading visitors to the playground. Open to all ages and free to the public, the activation turned the park into an imaginative play space, encouraging families to get outside, move, and connect through an outdoor adventure.

The activation will make its next stop at Netflix House Philadelphia at the King of Prussia mall from June 27 through July 5, and Netflix House Dallas at the Galleria Dallas mall from July 13-19.

Plus, Netflix House has more "Little Streamers" programming for kids and families this summer, including character meet-and-greets (find CoComelon Lane's JJ at Philadelphia's King of Prussia mall on June 27-28 and Galleria Dallas mall on June 18-19, and Sesame Street's Elmo at Galleria Dallas on June 18-19), a passport activity guide, and more arts and crafts events on the way.

Learn More About Parental Controls on the Netflix App

Just as important as what kids watch is the environment they're watching in. Dedicated kids profiles, customizable parental controls, and a carefully curated viewing experience help children explore at their own pace while giving parents added confidence and peace of mind.

Refer to our handy how-to guide to personalize how your child connects with their new favorite shows, with features like title-level blocking, profile lock PINs, and more.

London, UK, Friday 12th June, 2026 - Today, Outright Games has revealed Sesame Street: Friends & Fun, a brand-new 3D narrative adventure game for up to two players, inspired by the globally beloved children’s series Sesame Street. Coming 9th October 2026, to Nintendo Switch™, PlayStation®4, PlayStation®5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, the game delivers a story-driven, exploration-led experience designed for preschoolers.

In Sesame Street: Friends & Fun, players move into the neighbourhood just as preparations begin for a big community celebration. Taking on the role of the newest resident on Sesame Street, players can fully customise their character and join their neighbours in getting everything ready for the party, with the adventure unfolding through interactive storytelling and playful surprises. Along the way, players can expect to befriend the residents, including Elmo, Grover, Bert and Ernie.

Sesame Street: Friends & Fun encourages exploration in safe and welcoming locations inspired by the show. Players can create and customise their own character, personalise their home, and explore the colourful street through light challenges and engaging activities. Mini-games and interactive tasks are woven throughout the story, introducing early math skills and concepts.

Designed specifically for young children, the focus is on a warm, funny, heartfelt story without pressure. Intuitive controls and positive reinforcement make it an accessible first gaming experience for preschoolers. Grown-ups, siblings and friends can also join in the fun with two-player local co-op, and parents can feel confident letting children explore independently in a trusted world that has supported families for generations.

Gaming and interactive experiences have been part of the Sesame Street portfolio for more than 40 years, dating back to the release of Sesame Street: Countdown for the Atari 2600 in 1981. Since then, Sesame Street has continued to explore and evolve interactive content across console games, digital apps, and SesameStreet.org. Every interactive experience is designed to strengthen children’s connections to Sesame Street characters and stories in ways that feel personal, playful, and empowering.

Since its debut in 1969, Sesame Street has become one of the most recognisable and trusted brands in children’s media worldwide. Today, Sesame Street reaches more than 300 million households across 190 countries and 30 languages. With 250 Emmy Awards and over five decades of research-backed educational impact, Sesame Street continues to connect children and families globally.

Sesame Street: Friends & Fun coming 9th October 2026, to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Combined with our comprehensive parental controls, this high-quality, curated environment lets kids discover at their own pace while giving parents added confidence and peace of mind.

"We're building a world where kids can not only watch their favorite stories, they can step inside them and interact with their favorite characters," said John Derderian, Netflix Vice President of Animation Series + Kids & Family TV. "We're creating a seamless destination for discovery, learning, and play. Whether it's reuniting with Hank and the Trash Truck crew for new adventures or making a smoothie with Peppa Pig, watching and playing on Netflix can be the fun and easiest part of every family's day."

'PAW Patrol' Becomes the Top Dog of Netflix

According to the H2 2025 Netflix Kids Content Performance Report, Pre-school has become the platform’s most hotly contested category.

Paw Patrol has claimed the No.1 position in Netflix kids content by hours viewed for H2 2025, driven by its debut on Netflix US, according to the newly released H2 2025 Netflix Kids Content Performance Report. Published by Independent Kids Media Consultant, Emily Horgan, the fifth edition of the report finds the Netflix kids landscape more competitive than at any point since the platform began releasing engagement data, with Pre-school being the most fiercely contested category.

Gabby’s Dollhouse remains the dominant force across the full year, while Ms. Rachel continues a remarkable climb, rising from No.6 at H1 2025 to No.4 within her first year on the platform. Against this tough competition, Sesame Street’s Netflix launch landed on the lower end of pre-school performance benchmarks.

Beyond pre-school, the report tracks the continued rise of creator-led content as a meaningful force on the platform. In addition to Ms. Rachel’s success, Mark Rober’s CrunchLabs makes a strong debut, reinforcing the pattern of YouTube-originated creators finding premium audiences on Netflix. The report also confirms the long-tail story of KPop Demon Hunters, whose H2 2025 engagement data cements its status as a breakout crossover phenomenon, driving viewing across streaming, music and YouTube well beyond its launch window.

H2 2025 Netflix Kids Content Performance Report

As the dust settles on Paramount’s acquisition by Skydance, the report examines the Warner Bros. Discovery catalogue currently on Netflix and considers what a potential Paramount-WBD merger could mean for kids franchise distribution. With Netflix stepping back from the deal, the implications for how valuable longstanding kids’ IPs, such as SpongeBob SquarePants and Teen Titan Go!, move between platforms are significant, and this edition begins to map what the reshaped landscape could look like.

“Last year, the kids content story on Netflix became one of heated competition,” said Emily Horgan, Publisher of the report and former Disney Executive. “What stands out in the H2 2025 data is the degree of movement within the rankings. Shows are trading positions, new IP is landing with genuine weight and even the most established franchises are having to earn their place. That level of competition is good for the industry, and it makes tracking the data more important than ever.

“Alongside that, the consolidation of creator-led content, the confirmed scale of KPop Demon Hunters and the success of cross generational titles tell us that the routes to top-tier performance in streaming are widening. The M&A environment adds another layer of complexity. Longstanding animated franchises, like SpongeBob, still drive significant streaming value. Where that IP lands, and on whose platform, will shape the kids’ streaming picture for years to come.”

Five editions of this report point to one consistent conclusion: the last 25 years of kids IP have produced a catalogue so durable and so deeply embedded in family viewing habits that new content is fighting for a very small amount of available headspace. Legacy titles dominate, and they do not give ground easily. Breaking through is difficult but possible. For anyone taking that swing, the push behind a launch has to be as strong as the content itself.

Key findings from the H2 2025 report:

  • Paw Patrol claims No.1 in hours viewed in H2 2025 following its Netflix US debut with 344m hours viewed.
  • Gabby’s Dollhouse remains the dominant force across the full year 2025 with more than 600m hours viewed.
  • Ms. Rachel rises to No.4, the highest ranking achieved by a new kids series within its first year on Netflix.
  • Sesame Street arrives on Netflix via a first-of-its-kind public-private partnership with PBS; the lean initial rollout of four new episodes delivers 6m views in its launch half. With an expanding YouTube presence and parallel Roblox activation, the brand’s 360-degree streaming reset is still in its early stages.
  • CoComelon’s decline is now a multi-year pattern, uninterrupted by new seasons or spin-offs; Little Angel posts renewed momentum, potentially signalling a second wave for YouTube-originated IP on Netflix.
  • SpongeBob SquarePants dominates comedy animation at 143m hours viewed, 40% ahead of its nearest competitor, without US Netflix distribution – a crucial strength for Paramount and Spin Master in the U.S.
  • Man Vs Baby launches in December and amasses 43.5m views, landing as the seventh biggest new series Netflix launched in H2 2025, with cross-generational reach across both kids and adult profiles.

The Netflix Kids Content Performance Report has established itself as the industry standard for children’s content analysis on the world’s leading streaming platform, with clients spanning major streaming services, global toy manufacturers and leading licensing companies.

More from Deadline:

How The Paramount-Warner Deal Could Hit Netflix’s Kids Content Offering

Netflix narrowly missed out on buying Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) and now new data has shone a light on the impact this could have on its kids content offering.

The latest Netflix Kids Content Performance Report, which compiles top-performing children’s shows on the streamer over the latter half of 2025, found that nearly one third of the most-watched either air on Paramount-owned Nickelodeon or WBD’s Cartoon Network. Some are Paramount and WBD properties, which could be brought back exclusively to Paramount+ and HBO Max – or a combined streamer – once that deal completes.

The list includes the most-watched Netflix kids show of the past six months, PAW Patrol, along with Peppa Pig, SpongeBob SquarePants, Teen Titans Go!, The Loud House and The Amazing World of Gumball. PAW Patrol and Peppa Pig are not owned by Paramount or WBD but have aired on their networks for years.

In fact, nearly half of the Warner Bros. kids and family catalog titles analyzed by the report are on Netflix in at least some markets, “a meaningful footprint that points to a robust and active licensing pipeline spanning both recent releases and deep catalogue,” it said. Add to that several Paramount properties including big-hitter SpongeBob.

“Under an exclusivity model, the loss of titles like Teen Titans Go! and The Amazing World of Gumball would represent a hit to Netflix’s kids engagement numbers,” said the report. “There’s no question these titles would all sit very comfortably alongside SpongeBob SquarePants in a strong animation offering for Paramount+, making the prospect of losing them to a consolidated competitor a real consideration for Netflix’s kids strategy.”

WBD’s “extensive animation deal” with Fox streamer Tubi, which was struck earlier this year, adds “further complexity” to the situation, according to the report.

Paramount’s SpongeBob was the seventh most-watched kids show on Netflix over the latter half of 2025, with well over 100 million hours viewed. On the WBD side, Teen Titans Go! was top with 98.2 million followed by The Amazing World of Gumball with 92.3 million. Cartoon Network properties have always tended to perform well for Netflix.

Kids shows like CoComelon, PAW Patrol and Ms. Rachel have been big hitters for Netflix for years, generating loyal family viewing and always appearing towards the top of the list when Netflix drops its regular data dumps.

PAW Patrol topped H2 2025 viewing on Netflix, according to today’s report, with a 38% uplift driving a whopping circa-350 million hours viewed. Gabby’s Dollhouse was second, followed by Peppa Pig then Ms. Rachel. CoComelon, which is soon shifting to Disney, fell by 30% hours viewed. “CoComelon remains a significant volume title but its downward trend is now a multi-year pattern, uninterrupted by new seasons or spin-offs,” said the report.
